Australian Democracy
There are only 20 countries (4.5% of the world’s population),
including Australia, that are considered ‘full democracies’ by the Economist
Intelligence Unit 2018 Index.
Liberal democracy is built on a core philosophy that calls
for a guarantee of the rights of the individual. These include freedom from arbitrary
authority, freedom of religion, the right to own and exchange private property,
rights to equal opportunity in healthcare, education and employment, and rights
to political participation and representation.
In today’s troubled world we need to protect and strengthen our
democracy or it will decay and individual rights will be lost.
